McElroy built many similar modern homes in the Philadelphia area from the 1950’s through 1970’s. Many, like this one, were set into beautiful, yet hilly sites that take full advantage of the natural surroundings with open floor plans and abundant use of floor to ceiling glass. The owners have carefully updated the home, by completely renovating the kitchen and bathrooms, and modernizing other key components to support the existing character. The flooring on the lower level was unified from carpeting and laminate wood floor to a reclaimed basketball court from a college in Wisconsin. The guest bathroom was updated with modern fixtures and matte white penny tile throughout. The upper level saw an update to the kitchen to include all new cabinetry and appliances to go along with hand formed and dip dyed porcelain wall tiles, soapstone countertops, petrified wood drawer pulls, Carrera marble mosaic floor and a reclaimed walnut bar top. The stair received a new steel and glass guardrail and adjacent hand dyed Maya Romanoff wallpaper, while the master bedroom entry was simplified to include a custom designed ebonized oak sliding door with integral antique bronze pull. The master bathroom was renovated to include imported fixtures, including a flush mounted rain shower, and a counterbalance of cleft finish slate and honed Carrera marble tiles on the floor and walls. New York, NY This 1,500 sf space was the first independent office for this digital post production company. They had previously been sharing space with collaborators, and wished to create a client friendly office that gave them their own unique identity. There were numerous constraints on the design, including budget, space, and project schedule. The company had virtually no overlap between occupying their existing and new space, requiring construction to occur while staff were present in the office. The solution was to develop a ‘clean’ construction process, where partitions were essentially furniture that were assembled and located in a way to define the required edit suites from the rest of the office. Standard Ikea storage cabinets formed the perimeter of the edit suites, but were clad in custom milled door panels made of recycled material. This gave a rich, finished appearance to what are normally utilitarian closets, and provided ample storage to keep this small office tidy. The edit suite interiors, doors and clerestories are clad in double wall polycarbonate panels, which provide the desired sound isolation, yet allowed natural light to exchange between office and the suites. The workstations, reception and coffee table were custom designed using reclaimed structural timbers, which complement the warm rustic feel of the door panels. The rest of the furniture and lighting has a mid-century/Scandinavian aesthetic, giving the whole ensemble a warm, modern feel. The simple stainless steel kitchen provides a neutral background to what are both conference room and break room, depending on client needs. New York, NY This bi-coastal company specializes in post-production video editing for major market advertisers. The New York office was undergoing the 3rd expansion of its existing space. Previous additions were done haphazardly, without much consideration of efficient layout and positive staff interaction. The main design exercise was to re-think the layout, incorporate the additional space the office was gaining, and establish a consistent identity. Staff seating was consolidated and separated from client circulation, yet remains at the heart of the office between producers and directors. This low budget project called for an innovative use of materials to help give the office an identity. In lieu of a standard gypsum board partition wall, a translucent polycarbonate screen was created that gives privacy to the producers, while allowing natural light to filter into the staff area. Cement board, typically used for backing ceramic tile, was utilized as a cladding material for the solid edit suite that appears to be floating behind the translucent panels. This solution created an easily identifiable destination for their clients that was also provided the required sound isolation from the rest of the office. The lounge was designed with simple, modern furnishings that are comfortable and clean, keeping with the office’s newfound aesthetic. This area is backed by a custom artisan plaster wall with vintage shelving built into it that holds a curated assemblage of interesting found objects. Adjacent to this area is a full kitchen to support daily staff and client use along with occasional events and parties. The heart of the space is the staff production area which is defined by partial height walls clad with cedar reclaimed from old water tanks, the steel strap marks still visible. The custom workstations fabricated for the original office space were re-used here and additional seating was layered in. The company prides itself on creating handcrafted products that are highly sustainable, so the design and materiality of the project reflected that. Reclaimed timbers for construction of the kitchen cabinetry and product display casework were locally sourced and custom built by a Brooklyn cabinetmaker. New York, NY This project called for the creation of a 1,200sf office/showroom for this artisan products company. The clients needed a space they could work, entertain clients and showcase their products. This required a small office space for 5 employees, a full kitchen and showroom. The company prides itself on creating handcrafted products that are highly sustainable, so the design and materiality of the project reflected that. Reclaimed timbers for construction of the kitchen cabinetry and product display casework were locally sourced and custom built by a Brooklyn cabinetmaker. Traverse City, MI This 3,000 square foot residence is set within two acres bound by dense trees, but open to a view of Grand Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. The landscape and view directly informed the geometry and spatial organization of the home. From the approach through a thick grove of trees to an open sunlit yard, to movement through the interior spaces, the residence is experienced as an orchestrated procession of views. The intent was that view and space is slowly revealed as one moves deeper into the site, and then further into the home itself. The west façade one views on approach, is intended to be a ‘formal front’, a collage of solid and opaque materials layered together to express separations in program, but revealing little of what is inside. The horizontal batten cedar cladding is cut open and lifted to become a louvered sunscreen for the double height entry space, which glows like a lantern in the evening. Utilitarian spaces such as garage, laundry, and bathrooms occupy this façade, granting prominence to more important functions to take advantage of the view. This gives the home a compelling duality that works both environmentally and programmatically. The mostly solid and louvered southwest exposures protect against summer sun, whilst the open and glassy east façade welcomes daylight in the morning and provides breathtaking views from the living and master bedroom spaces. The double height entry space becomes the fulcrum, uniting two equally important, but programmatically different public and private wings of the home. Boundaries of inside and outside are blurred. From the entry, green slate paving continues out to a patio, becoming an outdoor room open only to the bay view beyond. Cherry flooring continues out to cedar deck, and clerestory windows invite views of the tree canopy above. As one travels through the home, every movement is terminated with a view of the outside, extending the perceived spatial boundaries. These walls keep pristine surfaces for displaying artwork, while allowing structural beams, sprinkler and heating pipes to penetrate the birch paneling above. The walls inherent thickness reflects the enclosure of master bedroom closets and vanity beyond. The layout of the living area is open, yet defined, with easily identifiable zones reflecting specific functions. The furniture and decor is an assemblage of mid-century modern and found objects, marrying the clean design, with the spaces industrial past. New York, NY The client for this project came to me with a site and a name, The Ship. What ensued was a dramatic spatial change that took a long, low ceiling ground floor space with a dark basement, into a hip industrial bar with high ceilings. Occupancy and egress requirements for the space limited the allowable ‘public’ area within the bar. Instead of having excess back of house, we removed about a third of the ground floor. The subtly marked entry at the street leads to a non-descript long, low corridor at the end of which unfolds a dramatic double height space that one descends down to. The bar’s name is alluded to in the materiality and design, but in a modern way, with riveted aged zinc wall panels, custom booths upholstered with reclaimed patchwork sailcloth, and a dynamic lighting installation of inverted antique ship ventilation shafts. The bar utilizes many other found objects such as the common washbasin, antique doors and custom fabricated mirrors in the bathroom. Both the stair treads and window frames were made from the floor joists that were removed to open up the space. They purchased a 40 year old home from the original owners that were retired and moving on to a condo with less upkeep. The design challenge was to turn 'grandma's house' into a modern home on a tight budget. The new owners preferred an open plan, but the basement stair bisected the kitchen and living room. The solution was to open up the wall as much as possible and make this visual impediment into a feature of the home. Clad in reclaimed redwood, the enclosure became a fulcrum unifying the two spaces. As the first thing you see upon entry to the home, it works as a dramatic backdrop to the living room. On the kitchen side it cleverly hides vertical storage and becomes the cooking center, with a modern electric range top flanked by dual wall ovens. The volume also discretely maintains the existing basement stair with a flush mount door. The existing stained oak floor in the living room was refinished and sealed clear to maintain the woods natural tone. Simple modern furnishings complete the look in this space. In the kitchen, the warm redwood was counterbalanced with a green-grey cleft finish slate. The new cabinets are just matte white single panel to allow the rich floor and wall materials to carry the weight along with classic subway tile at the back splash. The dining room benefits from the existing skylight, but was outfitted with new lighting, a reclaimed drafting table and mid-century inspired shell chairs. The slate floor flows into the adjacent sun room, which was brightened with new paint and modern furnishings. The master bedroom suite was also completely updated, with a pass-thru closet at the entry and new reclaimed oak flooring, replacing existing wood laminate. The new bathroom is clad in porcelain tile that echoes honed travertine. All new fixtures are highlighted by the modern freestanding tub. New York, NY Jack's Coffee approached us to design their next outpost within the Roxy Hotel in TriBeCa. While the shop resides within the hotel lobby, it has it's own distinct entry, street presence and outdoor seating area. The interior of the space is anchored by a 16' reclaimed counter. The counter is surfaced in 3" thick marble, reclaimed from a plaza in Philadelphia. There is a reclaimed oak bar for seating along the window and custom cold beverage surround and merchandise shelving. The existing wood floor was painted 'Jack's Red' in keeping with their existing locations. The home was completely renovated, every surface being touched and the existing plan dramatically altered. The original kitchen was an enclosed room with a 'sun-room' set off of it to the rear of the home. The structural wall between what is now the kitchen and dining areas was removed, creating a unified space for cooking, eating and entertaining. Stained oak chevron floors were installed throughout the ground floor, with the existing oak floors stained to match upstairs. Shelter Island, NY This 2,000 square foot residence is a weekend retreat for this NYC family of three. The home was completely gutted with literally every surface touched. The plan was drastically changed from the original, as the rear of the home had an enclosed kitchen and sun room that was opened up to create a more unified, shared space for cooking, eating and entertaining. A rich materials palate was used, including stained oak chevron floors in the lower level, new bianco carrara marble fireplace mantle and hearth, all new kitchen cabinets and appliances. On the second floor a new full master bathroom and walk-in closet was created and both existing full baths were redone as well, all with Waterworks fixtures. Malvern, PA SRJ was hired by Eli Kahn Development and J.Loew and Associates to design combined offices for their company in a former 10,000sf warehouse space. They desired an open office that promoted more social interaction between staff, while still providing separation for private offices. The solution was to create a series of social public spaces that weave through the project and are defined by the more private offices and conference rooms. The existing structure was a basic shell of a building with concrete floors and CMU walls. There was little inherent quality to the existing space. The design radically transformed the space by inserting a variety of reclaimed materials and re-purposed objects to give it newfound character. The existing concrete floors were ground, stained and polished to reveal a beautiful patina. The reception desk is a combination of reclaimed live-edge wood, with the companies' logos branded into the face, and a corresponding blackened steel surround that ties into the glass framing for the offices and conference rooms. Industrial window frames were re-purposed from an old factory and re-glazed with vintage wire glass in a random pattern to create a translucent screen between public areas and staff workstations. Reclaimed lathe was used as wall cladding in the conference rooms and offices. The core of the project is the 'interactive space' which acts as a hub for all circulation and activity. This space is great to set up a laptop and work remote at one of the cafe tables or have an informal meeting on the comfortable lounge seating. By punching two large skylights in the center of the building we provided natural light to many spaces at once. There are 3 conference rooms of varying sizes and uses from a glass enclosed 'public' conference room off the reception, to the more private 'war room' off the offices. The 'board room' features a 15' long table, reclaimed brick walls and over-sized factory style pendants. All tables are made from reclaimed beams from a former factory in Pennsylvania. The break room features a regulation length shuffleboard table and access to an outdoor patio and additional seating. Lighting was an important feature in the space anchored by reclaimed factory lights from Czechoslovakia that occupy all the pubic spaces. STUDIOjamieson took several under-utilized spaces and transformed them into branded programming within the hotel. We first inserted Jack's Stir Brew Coffee into a former egress bay of the facade. We were then commissioned to create a new Oyster Bar within the existing lobby restaurant area and a new concession stand to service their basement art-house cinema. The Oyster Bar features custom brushed brass cold display cases, vintage clam-shell lighting sconces and Moroccan fish-scales mosaic tile. The Concession stand features a custom curved wood and glass display case to compliment the existing cinema lobby geometry. The neon cinema sign was salvaged and retrofit to serve as the new menu board. Theater style lighting was added to complete the look. The new owners were looking to modernize the existing kitchen and master bath while remaining respectful to Neutra's original vision and principles. The kitchen had undergone a number of renovations over the years, including painting all of the original wood cabinets white, changing the solid surface counter tops to 4x4 ceramic tile and replacing the faux travertine laminate tiles with maple hardwood. The new design re-introduced all off these original lost materials, by bringing back wood cabinets, travertine tile flooring and new matte white solid surface counter tops. The layout was left generally as it was, however the original kitchen was completely closed off from the floor to ceiling glass and view. We chose to create a large opening in this wall to allow for more open engagement of the kitchen with the living and dining spaces and the beautiful view. The master bathroom was in it's original state, with formica counter top and tile shower. The original shower partially blocked the ribbon windows that extend across the back of the room. From the exterior, this window existed, but was back painted. The design delicately replaced the existing single pane glazing with insulated glass in their original aluminum frames. The blocked window was exposed allowing them to remain uninterrupted the length of the wall. The wall of mirror at the vanity was maintained, including a new custom built in medicine cabinet that was also present in the original design. The original large vanity was eschewed for a large walk-in glass shower. The new walnut vanity was developed with a solid-surface top inspired by Neutra furniture designs where the top wraps the edge. Carrara marble tile was used on the floors, while travertine pattern porcelain tile was used for the walls. Treasure Island, FL This is a gut renovation of a 1,000sf 1940's bungalow 2 blocks from the beach in Treasure Island, Florida. A Manhattan art dealer chose to turn this tiny 3 bedroom, 2 bath house into a more appropriately sized 1 bedroom, 1 bath house with modern finishes and amenities. The floor plan was completely reworked to create an open kitchen/living/dining space with integrated seating at the island. This complements a more private master suite at the rear of the home opening up to the rear yard. The bathroom has a dramatic indoor/outdoor relationship with a full wall of glass to a private side-yard garden. The exterior of the home was modified to include new and larger windows to the private yard, new redwood fence that interlocks with the existing home and a floating carport roof structure that gives the home newfound street presence. Traverse City, MI This 3,000 square foot residence is set within two acres bound by dense trees, but open to a view of Grand Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. The landscape and view directly informed the geometry and spatial organization of the home. From the approach through a thick grove of trees to an open sunlit yard, to movement through the interior spaces, the residence is experienced as an orchestrated procession of views. The intent was that view and space is slowly revealed as one moves deeper into the site, and then further into the home itself. The west façade one views on approach, is intended to be a ‘formal front’, a collage of solid and opaque materials layered together to express separations in program, but revealing little of what is inside. The horizontal batten cedar cladding is cut open and lifted to become a louvered sunscreen for the double height entry space, which glows like a lantern in the evening. Utilitarian spaces such as garage, laundry, and bathrooms occupy this façade, granting prominence to more important functions to take advantage of the view. This gives the home a compelling duality that works both environmentally and programmatically. The mostly solid and louvered southwest exposures protect against summer sun, whilst the open and glassy east façade welcomes daylight in the morning and provides breathtaking views from the living and master bedroom spaces. The double height entry space becomes the fulcrum, uniting two equally important, but programmatically different public and private wings of the home. Boundaries of inside and outside are blurred. From the entry, green slate paving continues out to a patio, becoming an outdoor room open only to the bay view beyond. Cherry flooring continues out to cedar deck, and clerestory windows invite views of the tree canopy above. As one travels through the home, every movement is terminated with a view of the outside, extending the perceived spatial boundaries. New York, NY This digital post production company quickly outgrew the first space that I designed for them and found a 5,000sf loft in SoHo to expand their business. Their clients often spend all day in the office supervising development of the work, so it’s important that both the private edit suites and public lounge areas be engaging and comfortable. One enters the space into an inviting client lounge and reception area taking advantage of the large loft windows overlooking Broadway below. This area is backed by a custom artisan plaster wall with vintage shelving built into it that holds a curated assemblage of interesting found objects. Adjacent to this area is a full kitchen to support daily staff and client use along with occasional events and parties. The heart of the space is the staff production area which is defined by partial height walls clad with cedar reclaimed from old water tanks, the steel strap marks still visible. The custom workstations fabricated for the original office space were re-used here and additional seating was layered in. At the perimeter, the more private offices and edit suites occur, also taking advantage of the natural light. Additional character was added to the space through the use of a reclaimed bar that was turned into a reception desk, industrial light fixtures and other vintage furniture and objects. STUDIOjamieson took several under-utilized spaces and transformed them into branded programming within the hotel. We first inserted Jack's Stir Brew Coffee into a former egress bay of the facade. We were then commissioned to create a new Oyster Bar within the existing lobby restaurant area and a new concession stand to service their basement art-house cinema. The Oyster Bar features custom brushed brass cold display cases, vintage clam-shell lighting sconces and Moroccan fish-scales mosaic tile. The Concession stand features a custom curved wood and glass display case to compliment the existing cinema lobby geometry. The neon cinema sign was salvaged and retrofit to serve as the new menu board. Theater style lighting was added to complete the look. They purchased a 40 year old home from the original owners that were retired and moving on to a condo with less upkeep. The design challenge was to turn 'grandma's house' into a modern home on a tight budget. The new owners preferred an open plan, but the basement stair bisected the kitchen and living room. The solution was to open up the wall as much as possible and make this visual impediment into a feature of the home. Clad in reclaimed redwood, the enclosure became a fulcrum unifying the two spaces. As the first thing you see upon entry to the home, it works as a dramatic backdrop to the living room. On the kitchen side it cleverly hides vertical storage and becomes the cooking center, with a modern electric range top flanked by dual wall ovens. The volume also discretely maintains the existing basement stair with a flush mount door. The existing stained oak floor in the living room was refinished and sealed clear to maintain the woods natural tone. Simple modern furnishings complete the look in this space. In the kitchen, the warm redwood was counterbalanced with a green-grey cleft finish slate. The new cabinets are just matte white single panel to allow the rich floor and wall materials to carry the weight along with classic subway tile at the back splash. The dining room benefits from the existing skylight, but was outfitted with new lighting, a reclaimed drafting table and mid-century inspired shell chairs. The slate floor flows into the adjacent sun room, which was brightened with new paint and modern furnishings. The master bedroom suite was also completely updated, with a pass-thru closet at the entry and new reclaimed oak flooring, replacing existing wood laminate. The new bathroom is clad in porcelain tile that echoes honed travertine. All new fixtures are highlighted by the modern freestanding tub. Shelter Is., NY This 2,000 sf private residence on the North Shore of Long Island is the weekend home of a Manhattan family of three. The home was completely renovated, every surface being touched and the existing plan dramatically altered. The original kitchen was an enclosed room with a 'sun-room' set off of it to the rear of the home. The structural wall between what is now the kitchen and dining areas was removed, creating a unified space for cooking, eating and entertaining. Stained oak chevron floors were installed throughout the ground floor, with the existing oak floors stained to match upstairs. The existing fireplace received a new bianco carrara hearth and mantle set into a paneled enclosure that acts as the fulcrum between the living room and kitchen. Both full bathrooms were completely renovated. The lower level with custom painted wood paneling and unlacquered brass fixtures, while the upper level has a carrara marble vanity, floor and wall tile. A new full master bathroom was also added with a custom statuary marble vanity. The ceilings in the upper level bedrooms were vaulted, creating more dramatic space. While the shop resides within the hotel lobby, it has it's own distinct entry, street presence and outdoor seating area. The interior of the space is anchored by a 16' reclaimed counter. The counter is surfaced in 3" thick marble, reclaimed from a plaza in Philadelphia. There is a reclaimed oak bar for seating along the window and custom cold beverage surround and merchandise shelving. Malvern, PA SRJ was hired by Eli Kahn Development and J.Loew and Associates to design combined offices for their company in a former 10,000sf warehouse space. They desired an open office that promoted more social interaction between staff, while still providing separation for private offices. The solution was to create a series of social public spaces that weave through the project and are defined by the more private offices and conference rooms. The existing structure was a basic shell of a building with concrete floors and CMU walls. There was little inherent quality to the existing space. The design radically transformed the space by inserting a variety of reclaimed materials and re-purposed objects to give it newfound character. The existing concrete floors were ground, stained and polished to reveal a beautiful patina. The reception desk is a combination of reclaimed live-edge wood, with the companies' logos branded into the face, and a corresponding blackened steel surround that ties into the glass framing for the offices and conference rooms. Industrial window frames were re-purposed from an old factory and re-glazed with vintage wire glass in a random pattern to create a translucent screen between public areas and staff workstations. Reclaimed lathe was used as wall cladding in the conference rooms and offices. The core of the project is the 'interactive space' which acts as a hub for all circulation and activity. This space is great to set up a laptop and work remote at one of the cafe tables or have an informal meeting on the comfortable lounge seating. By punching two large skylights in the center of the building we provided natural light to many spaces at once. There are 3 conference rooms of varying sizes and uses from a glass enclosed 'public' conference room off the reception, to the more private 'war room' off the offices. The 'board room' features a 15' long table, reclaimed brick walls and over-sized factory style pendants. All tables are made from reclaimed beams from a former factory in Pennsylvania. The break room features a regulation length shuffleboard table and access to an outdoor patio and additional seating. Lighting was an important feature in the space anchored by reclaimed factory lights from Czechoslovakia that occupy all the pubic spaces. New York, NY This bi-coastal company specializes in post-production video editing for major market advertisers. The New York office was undergoing the 3rd expansion of its existing space. Previous additions were done haphazardly, without much consideration of efficient layout and positive staff interaction. The main design exercise was to re-think the layout, incorporate the additional space the office was gaining, and establish a consistent identity. Staff seating was consolidated and separated from client circulation, yet remains at the heart of the office between producers and directors. This low budget project called for an innovative use of materials to help give the office an identity. In lieu of a standard gypsum board partition wall, a translucent polycarbonate screen was created that gives privacy to the producers, while allowing natural light to filter into the staff area. Cement board, typically used for backing ceramic tile, was utilized as a cladding material for the solid edit suite that appears to be floating behind the translucent panels. This solution created an easily identifiable destination for their clients that was also provided the required sound isolation from the rest of the office. The lounge was designed with simple, modern furnishings that are comfortable and clean, keeping with the office’s newfound aesthetic. New York, NY The client for this project came to me with a site and a name, The Ship. What ensued was a dramatic spatial change that took a long, low ceiling ground floor space with a dark basement, into a hip industrial bar with high ceilings. Occupancy and egress requirements for the space limited the allowable ‘public’ area within the bar. Instead of having excess back of house, we removed about a third of the ground floor. The subtly marked entry at the street leads to a non-descript long, low corridor at the end of which unfolds a dramatic double height space that one descends down to. The bar’s name is alluded to in the materiality and design, but in a modern way, with riveted aged zinc wall panels, custom booths upholstered with reclaimed patchwork sailcloth, and a dynamic lighting installation of inverted antique ship ventilation shafts. The bar utilizes many other found objects such as the common washbasin, antique doors and custom fabricated mirrors in the bathroom. Both the stair treads and window frames were made from the floor joists that were removed to open up the space. Gulph Mills, PA   Designed by Richard Neutra in 1959 for the David Coveney family, this 3,000+ private residence was purchased from the original owners in 2013. The new owners were looking to modernize the existing kitchen and master bath while remaining respectful to Neutra's original vision and principles. The kitchen had undergone a number of renovations over the years, including painting all of the original wood cabinets white, changing the solid surface counter tops to 4x4 ceramic tile and replacing the faux travertine laminate tiles with maple hardwood. The new design re-introduced all off these original lost materials, by bringing back wood cabinets, travertine tile flooring and new matte white solid surface counter tops. The layout was left generally as it was, however the original kitchen was completely closed off from the floor to ceiling glass and view. We chose to create a large opening in this wall to allow for more open engagement of the kitchen with the living and dining spaces and the beautiful view. The master bathroom was in it's original state, with formica counter top and tile shower. The original shower partially blocked the ribbon windows that extend across the back of the room. From the exterior, this window existed, but was back painted. The design delicately replaced the existing single pane glazing with insulated glass in their original aluminum frames. The blocked window was exposed allowing them to remain uninterrupted the length of the wall. The wall of mirror at the vanity was maintained, including a new custom built in medicine cabinet that was also present in the original design. The original large vanity was eschewed for a large walk-in glass shower. The new walnut vanity was developed with a solid-surface top inspired by Neutra furniture designs where the top wraps the edge. Carrara marble tile was used on the floors, while travertine pattern porcelain tile was used for the walls. Treasure Island, FL This is a gut renovation of a 1,000sf 1940's bungalow 2 blocks from the beach in Treasure Island, Florida. A Manhattan art dealer chose to turn this tiny 3 bedroom, 2 bath house into a more appropriately sized 1 bedroom, 1 bath house with modern finishes and amenities. The floor plan was completely reworked to create an open kitchen/living/dining space with integrated seating at the island. This complements a more private master suite at the rear of the home opening up to the rear yard. The bathroom has a dramatic indoor/outdoor relationship with a full wall of glass to a private side-yard garden. The exterior of the home was modified to include new and larger windows to the private yard, new redwood fence that interlocks with the existing home and a floating carport roof structure that gives the home newfound street presence. New York, NY This 1,500 sf space was the first independent office for this digital post production company. They had previously been sharing space with collaborators, and wished to create a client friendly office that gave them their own unique identity. There were numerous constraints on the design, including budget, space, and project schedule. The company had virtually no overlap between occupying their existing and new space, requiring construction to occur while staff were present in the office. The solution was to develop a ‘clean’ construction process, where partitions were essentially furniture that were assembled and located in a way to define the required edit suites from the rest of the office. Standard Ikea storage cabinets formed the perimeter of the edit suites, but were clad in custom milled door panels made of recycled material. This gave a rich, finished appearance to what are normally utilitarian closets, and provided ample storage to keep this small office tidy. The edit suite interiors, doors and clerestories are clad in double wall polycarbonate panels, which provide the desired sound isolation, yet allowed natural light to exchange between office and the suites. The workstations, reception and coffee table were custom designed using reclaimed structural timbers, which complement the warm rustic feel of the door panels. The rest of the furniture and lighting has a mid-century/Scandinavian aesthetic, giving the whole ensemble a warm, modern feel. The simple stainless steel kitchen provides a neutral background to what are both conference room and break room, depending on client needs.
