BROADVIEW . Wayne, PA

This Mid-Century Modern home was originally built by Robert McElroy in 1963 for the owner’s parents.  It stayed in their family until their passing, when the owner inherited his childhood home. Now retired himself, and still local to the area, he chose to make this his forever home by updating the now 60 year old original finishes and making some major modifications to expand and update it. The basic program and layout of the home remained in-tact, however we vaulted the living room ceiling to give that space and its dramatic copper clad fireplace more hierarchy and natural light. This is separated from the main entry by a new steel and walnut screen wall, replacing what was once a solid wall, again, creating a more open and light filled space.

The existing 2-car garage was finished to create an enlarged kitchen and connecting den space with a linear gas fireplace. The kitchen features custom walnut cabinetry with built-in appliances. We then created a new 2-car detached garage with a bonus flex space on the rear of the home and workshop below. The new garage connects to the existing home with a covered walkway in the front and deck in the rear, its design a pure extension of the existing home’s lines and aesthetic.

The primary bedroom suite was also completely redone, creating a new layout with walnut walk-in closet and matching double vanity, walk-in shower and enclosed toilet room. The lower level bedrooms, additional full bath and powder room were also fully renovated. The exterior of the home was completely reclad in wood-look composite cladding, and a new standing seam metal roof was added. The new stone mass for the den fireplace utilizes matching stone to the existing facade.

The rear yard featured an existing pool and bath house. The pool was refurbished, the bath house was torn down and redesigned to match the renovated main house. A new deck was added around the pool and a shade structure, featuring an outdoor grill station was built. The new bath house and shade structure are sited to frame and protect views from the home and create a secluded oasis for the owner.
